Håkon Wium Lie

Håkon Wium Lie, a name that rolls off the tongue like a carefully crafted CSS declaration, is one of the unsung heroes of the modern web. Back in 1994, while working at CERN alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee, he co-proposed Cascading Style Sheets, forever changing the digital landscape from a monotonous text-based affair to, well, whatever design disaster your cousin's blog happens to be today. It's a small step for man, a giant leap for garish backgrounds and Comic Sans.

Before CSS, web pages were a wild west of inline styling and browser-specific quirks, forcing developers to hack their way to a semblance of design. Lie's invention brought order to the chaos, separating content from presentation and allowing designers to, theoretically, create beautiful, consistent websites. He later worked at Opera Software, continuing to advocate for web standards and ensuring browsers played nice with his brainchild.

While he might not have invented the internet itself, his contribution means we don't have to experience it in plain black and white Times New Roman. For that alone, a grateful world (and a thousand frustrated web developers) owes him a debt of gratitude. He's also been a vocal proponent of open standards and was a board member of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, proving that even tech wizards can occasionally venture outside the digital realm.
