Hannah Senesh

Born in Budapest, Hannah Senesh was a talented poet who embraced Zionism early in life. She immigrated to British Mandate Palestine in 1939, immersing herself in the kibbutz movement and Hebrew language, fully committing to her Jewish identity and the nascent Jewish homeland.

During World War II, Senesh volunteered for a highly dangerous mission: to parachute behind enemy lines in her native Hungary to aid Allied efforts, rescue downed airmen, and, most crucially, help save Hungarian Jews from deportation to concentration camps. This was not a mission for the faint of heart, or those with a penchant for long, healthy lives.

She was captured shortly after crossing into Hungary, interrogated, and brutally tortured for months, but she refused to divulge any information. Displaying astonishing courage and resilience, Senesh maintained her silence, ultimately facing a firing squad with defiance. Her unwavering commitment to her people and her extraordinary bravery have made her a posthumous national hero in Israel, and a permanent fixture in the pantheon of ultimate kvell-worthiness.
