Born in Vienna, Hans Selye spent much of his life in Canada, becoming a pioneer in endocrinology. His groundbreaking work in the 1930s defined the concept of biological stress, observing that the body responds to various noxious stimuli with a general adaptation syndrome. Before Selye, "stress" was merely a term for engineering, describing external pressure; after him, it became an internal, biological phenomenon we all experience far too often.

Selye wasn't Jewish by identity or practice, but his origins included some Jewish ancestry, enough to earn him a spot in our catalog of kvell-worthy individuals. He famously stated, "It's not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it." A true kvell-worthy statement if ever there was one.

His research laid the foundation for understanding how stress impacts health and disease, a field that remains profoundly relevant today. So the next time you feel like you're about to crack under pressure, remember Hans Selye, the man who gave your misery a name.
