Hasan Minhaj

Hasan Minhaj, a man whose comedic timing is as sharp as his suits, has carved out a niche in the world of political humor. He's tackled everything from Saudi Arabian politics to the American healthcare system, proving that even the most dire topics can be fodder for a good laugh. And, for the most part, he's done it without resorting to stale jokes about bagels or Bar Mitzvahs. Good for him.

While Minhaj's comedic sensibilities are undeniably on point, his Jewish bona fides are, shall we say, less so. Born to Indian Muslim immigrants, his connection to the Tribe is about as strong as a gefilte fish on a hot day. In other words, nonexistent. One can almost hear the collective sigh of disappointment from Jewish mothers everywhere, wishing they could claim him as their own.

Despite the lack of a menorah in his childhood home, Minhaj has managed to achieve a level of success that would make any kvelling Jewish parent proud. Hosting a Peabody Award-winning show, performing for the President, and generally being a witty, incisive voice in the cultural landscape? That's some serious nachas right there. It's almost enough to make us overlook the whole "not Jewish" thing.

So, while Hasan Minhaj won't be leading a Seder anytime soon, we can still appreciate his contributions to the world of comedy and political discourse. He's a testament to the fact that you don't need to be Jewish to be brilliant, funny, and — dare we say it — even a little bit kvell-worthy. Just don't expect him to know the difference between a latke and a hamantash.
