Henrietta Lacks, born Loretta Pleasant, was a mother of five who lived a quiet life as a tobacco farmer. In 1951, while seeking treatment for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a sample of her cells was taken without her or her family's knowledge or consent. These cells, remarkably, continued to grow and divide indefinitely in the lab, unlike any human cells seen before.

Dubbed "HeLa" (from the first two letters of her first and last names), these cells became the bedrock of biomedical research. They were instrumental in developing the polio vaccine, understanding cancer, HIV, gene mapping, and even the effects of zero gravity in space. Her biological legacy is truly immense, forming the basis for countless scientific breakthroughs.

While her cells brought immeasurable progress to humanity, Lacks herself died shortly after their extraction, unaware of the profound impact she would have. Her family remained oblivious to the existence and widespread use of HeLa cells for over two decades, only discovering the truth through scientific articles in the 1970s. The ethical questions surrounding the initial acquisition of her cells and the subsequent commercialization of the HeLa line continue to spark debate about patient rights, consent, and medical ethics to this day.
