Born a free man of color in Louisiana, Homer Plessy's ancestry was predominantly European, with only one-eighth African American heritage. Despite being seven-eighths white, under Louisiana law, he was considered Black, and thus subject to segregationist policies. This racial classification, based on the "one-drop rule," was the very injustice he sought to challenge.

In 1892, Plessy deliberately boarded a "whites-only" railcar, knowing full well he would be arrested. This planned act of civil disobedience was a test case orchestrated by a group of civil rights advocates, the Comite des Citoyens. His arrest and subsequent legal battle culminated in the landmark 1896 Supreme Court decision, Plessy v. Ferguson, which upheld racial segregation under the doctrine of "separate but equal."

While the immediate outcome was a devastating setback for civil rights, legitimizing Jim Crow laws for decades, Plessy's challenge laid crucial groundwork for future movements. His name, forever linked to this pivotal case, serves as a stark reminder of the historical struggle against racial discrimination in America. He wasn't Jewish, but he certainly brought about some kvetching.
