Hugh Laurie, a man whose medical advice on "House" was so convincing many probably considered it legitimate, hails from Oxford, England. Born James Hugh Calum Laurie, his lineage traces back to Scottish and English roots, thoroughly Protestant in nature, proving that not all brilliant, brooding minds have a secret Jewish backstory.

Despite a career spanning decades, from the comedic brilliance of "Blackadder" and "Fry & Laurie" to the dramatic depths of "House M.D." and "The Night Manager," Laurie has never shown any personal connection to Judaism. His background is firmly rooted in the Church of Scotland, and his education at Eton College and Cambridge University further cement his very British, very non-Jewish identity.

Yet, his portrayal of Dr. Gregory House was so compelling, so riddled with witty cynicism and an underlying brilliance, that one might have been tempted to ascribe some "kvell" to a hypothetical Jewish grandmother. Alas, the "oy vey" was purely an act, albeit a masterful one. He's just a very talented gentile who made an astounding amount of money pretending to be an American doctor.
