Born in Kuryłówka, then part of the Russian Empire, Ignacy Jan Paderewski was, by all accounts, as Polish as Chopin, pierogi, and a profound sense of historical grievance. His family lineage appears distinctly free of any Hebrew school enrollment, synagogue attendance, or even a fleeting thought of converting for the tax breaks. He was a devout Catholic, which, while not Jewish, is certainly a religion. And, quite famously, not ours. So, zero points for origin, and a hearty zero for identity. No 'Crypto-Jew' here, just a regular, garden-variety, piano-playing Pole.

However, one cannot simply ignore a man who was both a world-renowned piano superstar and the Prime Minister of Poland. During World War I, Paderewski leveraged his fame to champion Polish independence, even meeting with President Woodrow Wilson. He served briefly as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in 1919, helping to shape the reborn Polish state.
