Ilhan Omar
Ilhan Omar arrived in the United States as a refugee from Somalia, eventually making her way to Minnesota, where she built a career in politics. She's often lauded as a progressive voice, but her tenure has been, shall we say, fraught with a certain amount of... energetic debate.
Her outspoken views on Israel have certainly garnered attention, some of it quite heated. While she's a regular fixture in the news cycle, and not always for reasons one might call "kvell-worthy" to Jewish constituents, she certainly knows how to get people talking.
Despite the kerfuffle she often generates, Omar remains a prominent figure in American politics, representing a district with a significant Somali and Muslim population. Her journey from refugee to U.S. Congresswoman is, in itself, a remarkable American story, even if her takes aren't always universally embraced.
