Issaak Babel was born in Odessa, Russian Empire, to a Jewish family. His early life was steeped in the Jewish culture of his hometown, though his family was not particularly religious. He pursued an education, learning several languages, and began his writing career under the mentorship of Maxim Gorky, who encouraged him to write about what he knew best: the Jewish experience.

Babel's most famous works, "Red Cavalry" and "Odessa Tales," vividly depict the harsh realities of the Russian Civil War and the colorful, often violent, lives of Jewish gangsters in his native city. His unflinching realism and distinctive style earned him critical acclaim, cementing his place as a master of the short story. While not overtly religious in his personal life, his profound exploration of Jewish themes and characters certainly establishes a strong cultural identity.

Unfortunately, Babel's literary success in the Soviet Union was cut short by the increasing repression under Stalin. His satirical edge and refusal to conform to socialist realism made him a target. He was arrested in 1939, accused of anti-Soviet activities and espionage, and executed in 1940. He was posthumously rehabilitated during the Khrushchev Thaw, but the world lost a unique literary voice far too soon.
