Isaac Babel, born in Odessa, was a master of the short story, known for his ability to encapsulate immense detail and emotion in concise prose. His most famous works, "Red Cavalry" and "Odessa Tales," often explored the brutal realities of war and revolution through the lens of Jewish characters, weaving together violence, humor, and profound humanity.

Despite — or perhaps because of — his literary success and his Jewish background, Babel eventually fell afoul of the Soviet authorities. He was arrested in 1939 during the Great Purge, accused of anti-Soviet conspiracy and espionage, charges that were, predictably, baseless.

He was executed in 1940, and his works were suppressed for decades, only to be rediscovered and celebrated much later. His enduring legacy lies in his unique voice and his unflinching portrayal of a world that was both distinctly Jewish and universally human, a testament to the power of words even in the face of tyranny.
