Jackie Tohn
Our review of the first season of "Nobody Wants This", masquerading as a Timothy Simons profile, was written in response to clickbait that called the show antisemitic. We were appalled; well, that's the point of clickbait, isn't it? So let's talk about season 2...
Once again, we got our shiksa and our rabbi, once again, they have relationship troubles, once again, the rabbi's mother disapproves and his father shrugs, once again... (spoiler alert, do not click if you have not watched to the end.) So why? Why rinse and repeat? And why did we enjoy it despite the rinse and repeat?
We enjoyed it because Adam Brody and Kristen Bell are still delightful; the show even toned down her Judaism cluelessness just a bit. (She still needs to be explained what a yenta is, but so what? Perhaps she hasn't seen "Fiddler on the Roof".) And the ridiculous claims of antisemitism centering about Jewish stereotypes should be gone: the characters are fleshed out more, especially the rabbi's sister-in-law Esther, played by Jackie Tohn. She is no longer just a shrill, she's got a personality! And now she's got bangs! (Should we have hidden that under a spoiler alert?)
As for the reason for rinse and repeat, they are planning to stretch the story over five seasons.
Does that mean we will have to do these masquerading profiles three more times?
