Jay-Z
Shawn Carter, known to the world as Jay-Z, has built an empire out of rhymes and shrewd business dealings. From his early days hawking CDs out of his car to founding Roc-A-Fella Records and eventually Roc Nation, he's proven that hustle knows no bounds, even if those bounds don't extend to the Promised Land.
While his ascent to billionaire status and his marriage to pop royalty Beyoncé might make some kvell, alas, the lineage doesn't quite check out. There's no hidden ancestral scroll or long-lost menorah in his family tree. His connection to Judaism is, shall we say, tangential at best – perhaps a distant appreciation for fine delicatessen, but that's pure speculation.
So, while Jay-Z certainly embodies the spirit of self-made success and a keen understanding of the market, attributes often, and sometimes accurately, ascribed to the tribe, his scores for Identity and Origin remain firmly at zero. Kvell-worthiness, however, is another story entirely; you don't build an empire and marry Queen Bey without possessing a certain je ne sais quoi that inspires a collective 'mazel tov' (even if he doesn't know what it means).
