Curly Howard
Born Jerome Lester Horwitz, Curly Howard was undoubtedly Jewish by birth, hailing from a prominent Ashkenazi Jewish family in Brooklyn. His brothers, Moe and Shemp Howard, also found fame as Stooges, ensuring a high kvell factor for their mother, despite the decidedly un-rabbinic career path.
While his Jewish identity wasn't central to his public persona, and he rarely, if ever, performed in overtly Jewish contexts, his comedic roots were firmly planted in the Borscht Belt tradition of physical comedy and vaudeville. It's safe to say that countless Jewish grandmothers kvell-ed over his antics, perhaps while wondering why he didn't marry a nice Jewish girl and become a doctor.
Curly's legacy, however, far transcends any single cultural identification. His exaggerated expressions, signature 'woo-woo-woo', and iconic bald head made him a universal figure of innocent mirth. He remains, to this day, an undisputed master of physical comedy, proving that sometimes, the most profound humor comes from the simplest, most delightfully silly source.
