Joan Didion, despite a surname that sounds suspiciously close to a Hebrew lamentation, was as WASP as they come. Hailing from Sacramento, California, her ancestors arrived in the Golden State with the Donner Party, though thankfully, they opted for less… involved culinary experiences. She was a fifth-generation Californian, which, in certain circles, is practically a religious designation in itself.

Didion’s writing, however, transcended her origins. She dissected the American condition with a surgeon's precision, often leaving her subjects flayed open for all to see. Her essays and novels, dealing with themes of societal decay, personal dissolution, and the ever-elusive nature of truth, earned her a reputation as a literary ice queen, albeit one with impeccable style and a penchant for existential dread.

While she never penned a single word about gefilte fish or the existential angst of a high holiday sermon, her keen observations and unflinching gaze at the human condition resonated with an audience far beyond the golden gates of California. One could argue that her ability to distill chaos into elegant prose was, in its own way, a form of intellectual kvell-worthiness, even if it wasn't explicitly Jewish nachas.
