Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Born in Northern Ireland, Jocelyn Bell Burnell found her passion for astronomy early, ultimately leading her to Cambridge University. There, while a postgraduate student, she meticulously analyzed data from a new radio telescope and spotted something peculiar: regularly pulsing radio signals emanating from outer space. Not quite little green men, but something far more scientifically intriguing.
Despite her crucial role in the discovery and initial analysis of these "pulsating radio sources" (soon dubbed pulsars), the Nobel Prize in Physics for this groundbreaking work went exclusively to her supervisor, Antony Hewish, and Martin Ryle in 1974. A rather glaring omission, as many in the scientific community agree, highlighting historical biases in recognizing contributions.
However, Bell Burnell’s brilliance wasn't to be overshadowed by institutional oversight. She went on to have a distinguished career, earning countless accolades, and in 2018, she was awarded the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. She promptly donated the entire £2.3 million prize money to help women, underrepresented minorities, and refugee students to become physics researchers, proving that while Nobel committees might miss a beat, true kvell-worthiness pulses on.
