Joe Shuster

Born in Toronto to Jewish immigrants, Joe Shuster’s lineage is as undeniable as Superman’s ability to leap tall buildings in a single bound. While his family roots were firmly planted in the Jewish tradition, Shuster himself didn't appear to be particularly devout, spending more time sketching heroes than attending services.

Alongside Jerry Siegel, Shuster brought to life Superman, the ultimate immigrant story. Fleeing a doomed planet and finding refuge in a new land, Superman’s origin resonates deeply with themes often found in Jewish folklore. Perhaps this is why the character, and the struggles of his creators, captured the hearts of millions.

Despite co-creating one of the most valuable intellectual properties in history, Shuster and Siegel famously sold the rights for a paltry sum, leading to decades of legal battles and financial hardship. It wasn't until much later in life, and thanks to public outcry, that DC Comics finally granted them a pension and proper credit. A genuine kvell, but one tempered by the bittersweet taste of belated justice.
