Josip Broz Tito

Josip Broz, better known as Tito, was born in Kumrovec, then part of Austria-Hungary, to a Croat father and Slovene mother. His early life was a whirlwind of poverty, metalworking, and trade union activism, leading him down the familiar path of Marxism. He was hardly a man of faith, least of all Judaism, preferring instead to place his unwavering belief in the proletariat and, more importantly, himself. That’s a 0 on the "I" front. And, given his well-documented Croatian and Slovenian parentage, a 0 for "O" as well. Case closed.

However, Tito was no stranger to the delicate dance of international relations, particularly when it came to the Middle East. While his personal connections to Jews were negligible, his political maneuvers often had ripple effects on Jewish communities and Israeli foreign policy. He balanced between East and West during the Cold War, championing the Non-Aligned Movement and often playing both sides for maximum advantage, which included some eyebrow-raising arms deals and political alliances.

Kvell-wise, Tito managed to hold together a fractious Yugoslavia for over three decades, a feat that, in hindsight, seems increasingly miraculous. He defied Stalin, built a unique brand of socialism, and even got a few resorts named after him. While the subsequent breakup of Yugoslavia wasn't exactly a banner moment for his legacy, his ability to keep a lid on ethnic tensions for so long was, if nothing else, a testament to his iron will and deft political touch. Not exactly a Jew, but he certainly made an impact, for better or worse.
