Kal Penn, born Kalpen Suresh Modi, is an accomplished actor and former White House aide, but his journey has not involved Jewish deli, bar mitzvahs, or even a casual "oy vey." He was raised in a Gujarati Indian immigrant family, and his heritage is Hindu. While he did play a Jewish character once, that was acting, not autobiography. Penn has often spoken about his grandparents being instrumental in the Indian independence movement, which, while commendable, doesn't exactly scream "kvell-worthy" in the traditional Jewish sense. So, while he’s achieved some impressive feats in Hollywood and Washington, D.C., his connection to Judaism remains, shall we say, tangential at best.

He has, however, brought a certain je ne sais quoi to stoner comedies and medical dramas alike, delighting audiences with his versatility. His stint in public service, working to connect the Obama administration with Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, was a noble endeavor, even if it didn't involve lighting Hanukkah candles in the Oval Office.

Penn is openly gay, a fact he shared in his 2021 memoir, further cementing his status as a trailblazer. But despite all his accomplishments and his undeniably charming demeanor, the Jewish community cannot, in good conscience, claim him as one of its own. He’s a mensch, perhaps, but a decidedly non-Jewish one.
