Katina Paxinou
Born Ekaterini Konstantopoulou, Katina Paxinou was a formidable presence on both stage and screen. Her theatrical career began in Greece before she moved on to London and eventually Broadway, earning critical acclaim for her powerful performances in classical and modern plays. She clearly didn't shy away from a dramatic entrance, or exit, as her career spanned continents and brought her significant accolades.
Hollywood beckoned, and Paxinou answered the call, making her American film debut in 1943 in "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Her portrayal of the tough-as-nails Pilar, opposite Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman, was so impactful it earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Not bad for a first crack at the Tinseltown machine.
While her Greek Orthodox background kept her from ever needing a menorah, her professional triumphs were undeniable. An international star who commanded attention in every scene she graced, Paxinou left a legacy as one of the most compelling character actresses of her era. Her presence alone was enough to raise the dramatic stakes, often making her co-stars look like mere mortals.
