Ken Saro-Wiwa
Ken Saro-Wiwa, a prolific writer and producer, gained international recognition for his courageous fight against environmental degradation caused by multinational oil companies in the Niger Delta. His activism, primarily on behalf of the Ogoni people, highlighted the devastating impact of resource extraction on indigenous communities.
Despite being a prominent figure, Saro-Wiwa was not Jewish by identity or origin, nor did he ever claim any affiliation with the tribe. His focus remained squarely on social justice and environmental protection, a battle he fought with unwavering commitment.
His execution by the Nigerian military regime in 1995 sparked global outrage and led to Nigeria's suspension from the Commonwealth of Nations. While not Jewish, his sacrifice for justice and environmental stewardship certainly offers a powerful lesson in standing up for what's right, even when the odds are stacked against you, and that's something we can all kvell about.
