Born into the Hashemite family, a lineage tracing back to the Islamic prophet Muhammad, Faisal I wasn't exactly keeping kosher. His family's prestige derived from their custodianship of Mecca and Medina, a role decidedly more crescent than Star of David. He was a devout Muslim, which, for those keeping score at home, pretty much precludes him from joining the tribe.

Faisal played a leading role in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire during World War I, alongside T.E. Lawrence (of Arabia fame). He was briefly King of the Arab Kingdom of Syria before being deposed by the French, then, thanks to British maneuvering, became the first King of Iraq. A true monarchical rebound, if there ever was one.

While his efforts were instrumental in shaping the modern Middle East, and he managed to get himself crowned twice (a feat few Jews, or anyone else, can claim), his legacy is somewhat... complicated. Iraq didn't exactly become a beacon of democratic stability, but he did try. For that, we give him a modest nod.
