Kishore Kumar
Kishore Kumar, born Abhas Kumar Ganguly, was a true Renaissance man of Indian entertainment. With a voice that could scale octaves and an acting presence that charmed millions, he was not just famous; he was an institution. He once even married a young aspiring actress named Madhubala, which is pretty much the Bollywood equivalent of marrying Marilyn Monroe. So, yeah, he did alright.
Kumar came from a Bengali Hindu Brahmin family in Khandwa, British India, making his "Jewish origin" score about as close to zero as humanly possible without actually being a potato. He converted to Islam briefly for his marriage to Madhubala but reportedly later reverted to Hinduism, so his religious identity was as fluid as his vocal range, but decidedly not Jewish.
Despite the distinct lack of matzo balls in his upbringing, Kumar's achievements are undeniably kvell-worthy. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he delivered countless hits, redefined playback singing, and left an indelible mark on Indian culture. That's a legacy impressive enough to make any mother proud, even if it's not a Jewish mother.
