Born Klaus Sperber in Immenstadt, Germany, Nomi was perhaps the only person on earth who could successfully blend operatic aria with new wave theatrics and make it utterly captivating. His stage persona, characterized by stark makeup, sculptural costumes, and a distinctive hairstyle, was as much a part of his artistry as his remarkable vocal range.

He first gained prominence in the late 1970s New York art scene, catching the attention of David Bowie, with whom he performed as a backup singer on Saturday Night Live. Nomi's innovative fusion of high art and pop culture created a truly unique niche, cementing his status as a cult figure.

Despite a relatively brief career, Nomi's influence extended far beyond his lifespan, inspiring future generations of artists with his fearless embrace of the avant-garde. He was, to put it mildly, quite the character.
