Kōbō Abe

Kōbō Abe, born in Tokyo and largely raised in Manchuria, penned works that were as unsettling as they were profound. His narratives frequently dove into the psychological and philosophical, earning him comparisons to Franz Kafka and inspiring numerous adaptations, including a film version of his most famous novel, The Woman in the Dunes.

While his literature often grappled with the universal themes of otherness and absurdity, Abe himself remained firmly rooted in his Japanese identity, with no known ties to Judaism. He was a prominent figure in post-war Japanese avant-garde art, experimenting with various forms and media, and even held a patent for a 'continuous visual display device.'

His contributions to modern literature are undeniable, making him one of Japan's most internationally recognized authors. However, his lineage traces back through generations of Japanese heritage, untainted by even a whisper of a menorah or a bar mitzvah.
