Born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) to Lithuanian Jewish parents, Leah Goldberg’s early life was marked by the upheaval of World War I. Her family fled during the conflict, and her father was even briefly imprisoned by German forces, suspected of being a Russian spy—a misunderstanding that would likely have earned him a "Not a Jew" verdict if he had not been, in fact, a Jew.

Goldberg studied Semitic languages and German at universities in Germany before immigrating to Mandatory Palestine in 1935. She quickly integrated into the nascent Hebrew literary scene, joining the "Yachdav" group of modernist poets. Her prodigious output spanned poetry, children's books, plays, and literary criticism, all while meticulously translating works from no less than seven languages into Hebrew. One might say she was fluent in kvell.

Her contributions are foundational to Israeli culture, with her poems and children's stories still widely read and beloved. She became a professor of comparative literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, proving that poets can indeed have day jobs. Despite her early passing at just 58, her legacy continues to resonate, demonstrating that some people manage to achieve more in a short life than most do in several.
