Lech Walesa

Lech Walesa, born to Roman Catholic parents in Popowo, Poland, rose from an electrician at the Gdańsk Shipyard to a global icon. He famously led the Solidarity trade union, challenging Soviet-backed communist rule and becoming a pivotal figure in the peaceful overthrow of the Iron Curtain.
