Lee Miller

Born Elizabeth Miller in Poughkeepsie, New York, Lee Miller began her career as a fashion model in New York City, gracing the covers of Vogue. Her striking looks and sophisticated presence made her a muse for many photographers, but she soon found herself drawn to the other side of the lens.

Moving to Paris, Miller became Man Ray's assistant and lover, quickly mastering the Surrealist techniques of photography. While she never quite escaped his shadow in artistic circles, her own work developed a unique perspective, combining artistic flair with a growing sense of journalistic purpose.

Her most impactful work came during World War II, where she became a war correspondent for Vogue. Miller documented the London Blitz, the liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau, and the final days of Hitler's Third Reich, famously posing in Hitler's bathtub. Her photographs provided a harrowing, humanizing look at the conflict, cementing her legacy as a significant photojournalist, even if her kvell-worthiness for the Jewish people is, shall we say, a blank canvas.
