Leonor Fini

Born in Buenos Aires to an Argentine father of Italian descent and an Italian mother, Leonor Fini's early life was a whirlwind of escape attempts from her father, often involving disguises and secret transatlantic voyages. Her formative years were spent in Trieste, Italy, where she was expelled from multiple schools, suggesting an early predilection for non-conformity. Instead of formal art training, she found her education in mortuary science, observing cadavers, a rather unique method for developing her anatomical prowess. Eventually, she moved to Paris, becoming a fixture in the Surrealist movement, though she famously refused to be constrained by its male-dominated dogma.

Fini's art, characterized by powerful, often sphinx-like women, eroticism, and mythological themes, consistently challenged societal norms and gender roles. She also dabbled in costume design for theater, opera, and film, and even designed bottles for Elsa Schiaparelli's perfumes. Her personal life was as unconventional as her art, embracing polyamory and living with two lovers, always surrounded by a multitude of cats, famously declaring that she preferred cats to humans.

While her heritage is entirely Italian and Argentine, with no indication of Jewish ancestry or identification, her relentless pursuit of artistic freedom and her unyielding spirit of independence make her a formidable figure.
