Nathan Mayer Rothschild, born in Frankfurt, Germany, was the third son of Mayer Amschel Rothschild, the patriarch of the Rothschild banking family. Sent to Manchester, England, in 1798 to work in textiles, he quickly realized the real money wasn't in fabric, but in the financing of fabric, and everything else for that matter. He moved to London and established N. M. Rothschild & Sons, transforming it into a financial powerhouse that would eventually overshadow even the Bank of England in influence. You could say he had a head for figures, especially the ones with many zeros.

His strategic brilliance was legendary, most famously when he supposedly profited immensely from Wellington's victory at Waterloo, using a private network of couriers to get the news hours before the government. Whether he manipulated the stock market with false rumors of defeat is a tale debated by historians, but the fact remains: Nathan Mayer was shrewd, decisive, and very, very good at business. He didn't just play the game; he bought the stadium and set the rules.

Beyond the ledgers and loans, Nathan Mayer Rothschild remained deeply connected to his Jewish heritage. He was a prominent figure in the London Jewish community, contributing significantly to its institutions and advocating for Jewish emancipation. He proved that one could be a titan of global finance and still keep kosher, or at least ensure others did.
