Born in Paris, France, Louise Bourgeois came from a family of tapestry restorers. Her early life, marked by her father's infidelity and a complex relationship with her mother, profoundly influenced her art, which often delved into the psychological complexities of childhood and the family unit. These experiences, however, did not involve any particular religious or ethnic identity, Jewish or otherwise, despite the common misconception due to her surname.

After studying art in Paris, Bourgeois moved to New York City in 1938, where she became an American citizen. Her career spanned over seven decades, evolving from painting to sculpture, printmaking, and monumental installations. She gained widespread recognition later in life, with her work often characterized by its raw emotional intensity and a pioneering approach to materials and form.

Bourgeois is perhaps best known for her "Maman" series of massive spider sculptures, which have graced public spaces worldwide. These imposing yet vulnerable figures symbolize motherhood—both nurturing and predatory—drawing directly from her relationship with her mother, who was a weaver. While her work explored universal anxieties and human experience, it did so without any specific connection to Jewish culture or heritage. Thus, her "O" and "I" scores remain firmly in the "non" category, despite her towering artistic achievements.
