Mariah Carey, the undisputed Queen of Christmas and vocal acrobat, sprung forth from a decidedly non-Jewish background. Her father was of African-American and Venezuelan descent, and her mother was of Irish ancestry. So, genetically speaking, not a bagel in the bunch. However, that's not where our story ends, or even really begins. We're here for the intrigue, aren't we?

It turns out Mariah's maternal grandmother, a woman named Katherine, married a Jewish man named David. While Katherine herself was not Jewish (and neither was Mariah's mother, Patricia), this brief familial connection introduces a sliver of tangential Jewishness into the Carey lineage. It's not enough to get her a free trip to Israel, but it's more than, say, Tom Brady has.

Mariah's illustrious career, marked by countless number-one hits and global superstardom, certainly brings a certain… nachas to anyone who appreciates a good comeback story and the sheer audacity of a woman who fully embraces her diva status. We can kvell over her talent, her resilience, and her uncanny ability to make us all feel festive, even if she isn't lighting Hanukkah candles herself.

So, while Mariah Carey might not be ordering matzo ball soup anytime soon, that distant flicker of a step-grandparent means she's not entirely in the dark. A mere whisper of the tribe, perhaps, but enough to earn a spot in our ever-expanding, and slightly scrutinizing, catalog.
