Born to a distinguished academic family in Moscow, Marina Tsvetaeva's heritage was thoroughly Russian, with her father a professor of art history and her mother a talented pianist of Polish-German descent. There's no hint of Jewish ancestry in her lineage, nor any indication of personal identification with Judaism.

Her life, however, was a masterclass in suffering. Exiled, impoverished, and eventually returning to a Soviet Union that devoured her family and spirit, Tsvetaeva's personal tragedies are almost legendary. Her poetry, characterized by its emotional intensity and innovative style, is considered among the greatest in the Russian language.

While we can't kvell over any Jewish connection, we can certainly kvell over her sheer poetic genius. She managed to produce an astonishing body of work under the most horrific circumstances, cementing her place as a literary giant, even if she's not one of ours.
