Marsha P. Johnson

Marsha P. Johnson, born Malcolm Michaels Jr., adopted her chosen name, with the 'P' standing for 'Pay It No Mind' — a phrase she famously used to deflect questions about her gender. This casual dismissal of societal norms was a hallmark of her life, making her an icon of the queer liberation movement long before it was fashionable to be anything but straight and cis. Johnson was a foundational member of the Gay Liberation Front and co-founder of STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), a pioneering organization dedicated to helping homeless LGBTQ+ youth.
