Born into poverty in Lyme Regis, England, Mary Anning’s early life was marked by both hardship and an uncanny knack for finding prehistoric treasures. While the other kids were busy playing with sticks and dirt, Mary was unearthing ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, essentially finding dragons. Talk about a childhood hobby that escalated quickly.

Her discoveries were monumental, providing critical evidence for extinction and deep time, concepts that were, shall we say, unpopular with the prevailing scientific and religious establishments. She taught herself anatomy and geology, meticulously cataloging her finds, yet the scientific gentlemen of the day were often content to buy her fossils, publish papers on them, and conveniently forget to mention her name. One might say she was truly ahead of her time, in more ways than one.

Despite the rampant sexism of the era, Anning's work profoundly influenced leading paleontologists like William Buckland and Richard Owen, and she was a key figure in the nascent field of paleontology. Her impact on our understanding of ancient life was so profound that even her dog, Tray, helped find a fossil, proving that sometimes even the pets are more accomplished than certain esteemed professors. Her legacy, finally, is as solid as the fossils she unearthed.
