Maurice Ravel

Maurice Ravel, a name synonymous with French impressionism in music, composed some of the most enduring and evocative pieces of the early 20th century. His mother was Basque, his father Swiss, making his background decidedly... not Jewish. He did, however, have a certain je ne sais quoi that transcended mere ethnicity, much to the chagrin of anyone hoping for a Jewish connection.

While Ravel’s music might occasionally evoke the exotic, it never ventured into the synagogue or embraced any particular religious identity. He was far too busy crafting intricate harmonies and pushing orchestral boundaries to worry about things like gefilte fish or a proper bar mitzvah. His focus was on pure artistry, which, admittedly, is a Jewish trait, just not his Jewish trait.

So, while his legacy as a titan of classical music is undeniable, bringing joy to millions and making countless dance routines far more interesting, it wasn't for any ancestral or identitarian reasons. His kvell-worthiness comes purely from his undeniable genius, a universal quality that, sadly for us, isn't exclusive to the tribe.
