Max Reinhardt, born Maximilian Goldmann, was a theatrical visionary of the early 20th century. Though he converted to Protestantism, his Jewish origin was a prominent feature of his life, especially when the Nazis came to power. He maintained connections to Jewish artists and producers, and his career was deeply intertwined with the cultural ferment of Central European Jewry, even if his personal practice was minimal.

Reinhardt's theatrical innovations were nothing short of legendary. From Berlin's Deutsches Theater to Salzburg's Festival and even Broadway, he masterfully blended spectacle with psychological insight, employing innovative staging, lighting, and ensemble acting to create immersive experiences. He directed over 2,000 productions, making him one of the most prolific and influential directors in history.

His contributions to theatre included pioneering the use of revolving stages and intimate audience interactions, profoundly influencing subsequent generations of directors. Forced to flee Europe in the 1930s due to his Jewish heritage, he continued his work in Hollywood, even establishing a drama school. His impact is still felt today, proving that genius, much like Jewish heritage, is something you can't easily erase.
