Maximilian Schell, born in Vienna, Austria, was the son of a Swiss writer and a German actress. His family fled to Switzerland in 1938 following the Anschluss, an understandable move given the political climate, though it had less to do with their personal religious persecution and more with his father's anti-Nazi views. Schell himself would later become a prominent figure in German-language cinema and theatre, often tackling weighty historical themes.

Schell’s career spanned decades, earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the 1961 film "Judgment at Nuremberg." In the film, he defended Nazi judges, showcasing his incredible talent for nuance and moral ambiguity. While his performance was undeniably powerful, it wasn't exactly a starring role for a nice Jewish boy.

Despite his deep dives into European history and his memorable performances concerning the Holocaust, Maximilian Schell had no known Jewish ancestry or personal identification with Judaism. He remained a cultural giant of German-speaking cinema, proving that one can be deeply involved in narratives touching on Jewish history without actually being, you know, Jewish.
