Mildred Gillars

Mildred Gillars, born Mildred Elizabeth Sisk, embarked on a fairly unremarkable career in vaudeville and radio before finding her niche: spreading Nazi propaganda. Turns out, crooning songs for Broadway didn't quite have the same je ne sais quoi as telling American soldiers their wives were cheating on them back home.

Her broadcasts from Germany, often under the moniker "Axis Sally", were a masterful blend of American popular music, veiled threats, and psychological warfare. She serenaded Allied troops with tunes while simultaneously trying to convince them their cause was lost, their families were suffering, and really, wouldn't they rather just surrender to the superior German forces?

After the war, Gillars was arrested, brought back to the United States, and tried for treason. She claimed she was merely acting under duress and was a victim of circumstances, much like a particularly bad audition. She was convicted, served a sentence, and then quietly faded into obscurity, presumably not to host any more morale-crushing radio shows.

While her voice might have been honeyed, her message was pure strychnine for Allied morale. Her service to the Third Reich firmly places her in the "Not a Jew" category, not just for her lack of Jewish heritage, but for her enthusiastic participation in a regime dedicated to its eradication. Kvell-worthiness? Only if you're Joseph Goebbels.
