Born Mildred Delores Jeter, her life's trajectory was irrevocably altered when she married Richard Loving in Washington, D.C. in 1958. Upon returning to their home state of Virginia, the newlyweds were arrested, indicted, and convicted for violating the state's Racial Integrity Act, which prohibited interracial marriage.
