Miriam Schapiro

Born in Toronto to Russian Jewish parents, Miriam Schapiro inherited a rich cultural tapestry long before she started cutting them up for art. Her father was an artist and a devoted Zionist, while her mother, a religious school teacher, likely ensured young Miriam knew her matzah from her challah. This familial background clearly instilled in her a strong sense of identity, both artistic and Jewish.

Schapiro became a pivotal figure in the feminist art movement, using traditionally "feminine" crafts like sewing and collage to challenge patriarchal art norms. Her "femmages" (a portmanteau of feminine and collage) celebrated women's domestic work and history, turning quilts and fabric patterns into high art. It was revolutionary, much like a good gefilte fish recipe in a world obsessed with sushi.

While she didn't paint synagogues or menorahs, Schapiro’s work profoundly influenced how art and gender intersect, carving out space for women's experiences in the art world.
