Moishe Postone

Born to parents who had immigrated from Eastern Europe, Moishe Postone grew up in a secular Jewish household. While he didn't actively identify with Jewish religious practice, his family's heritage undoubtedly shaped his intellectual lens, leading him to dissect societal structures with the rigor only a good, questioning Jewish mind can muster.

Postone earned his PhD in philosophy from the University of Frankfurt, where he studied under critical theorists like Jürgen Habermas. His magnum opus, Time, Labor, and Social Domination: A Reinterpretation of Marx's Critical Theory, isn't exactly light reading for your bubbe, but it cemented his reputation as a formidable intellectual. He was less interested in the proletariat versus the bourgeoisie and more in capitalism's abstract forms of domination. So, basically, he complicated things.

He spent decades as a professor of history at the University of Chicago, patiently explaining that Marx wasn't just about economic determinism or class struggle, but about how capitalism itself shapes the very fabric of human experience. His work continues to influence contemporary critical theory, proving that even if you don't kvell about a rabbi, you can certainly kvell about a professor who makes everyone else rethink Marx.
