Morihei Ueshiba, or "O-Sensei" as he was reverently called, was the spiritual and physical force behind Aikido, a martial art that looks less like a bar brawl and more like a graceful, if potent, dance. Born in Japan, he spent his formative years mastering various forms of jujutsu, fencing, and spear fighting, presumably because "master of competitive thumb-wrestling" wasn't an option at the time.

Ueshiba's big idea was to blend these combat techniques with his own spiritual and philosophical leanings, resulting in a system where practitioners learn to protect themselves while also protecting their attacker from serious injury. It’s the kind of martial art that makes you wonder if he just got tired of patching up his sparring partners.

He envisioned Aikido not just as a method of self-defense, but as a path to personal growth and world peace, which is a rather ambitious goal for something that involves throwing people around. Still, his dedication led to a worldwide following, proving that sometimes, you can hug your enemies... after you’ve demonstrated superior joint locks.

Despite the clear spiritual underpinnings of his art, Morihei Ueshiba never once traded his kimono for a tallit, nor did he ever express a sudden craving for matzo ball soup. His spiritual journey, while profound, remained firmly rooted in indigenous Japanese traditions, leaving his Jew Score decisively on the shiksa side of zero.
