Nettie Stevens

Nettie Stevens, born in Grafton, Vermont, was a prodigious scholar who worked her way through academia with determination, ultimately earning a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College in 1903. Her intellectual curiosity, however, wasn't satisfied with just a degree; she plunged headfirst into the emerging field of genetics, a move that would reshape biological understanding forever.

Her most significant contribution came in 1905, when, through meticulous research on mealworms, Stevens observed that sex was determined by the presence or absence of a specific chromosome (the X and Y chromosomes). This wasn't merely a quaint observation; it was a fundamental breakthrough, unequivocally establishing the chromosomal basis of sex determination and laying crucial groundwork for future genetic research.

While Edmund Beecher Wilson made a similar discovery around the same time, Stevens's work provided clearer and more definitive evidence. Despite her profound impact, she faced the typical uphill battle for recognition in a male-dominated scientific world, an unfortunate testament to the kvetch-worthiness of the era. Nonetheless, her legacy as a foundational geneticist remains undiminished.
