Octavius Catto

Octavius Catto was born free in South Carolina but spent most of his life in Philadelphia, becoming a prominent figure in the city's Black community. A brilliant scholar, he graduated as valedictorian from the Institute for Colored Youth (now Cheyney University) and later taught there, shaping minds and challenging racial norms long before it was fashionable, or even safe.

Beyond the classroom, Catto was a tireless advocate for civil rights. He fought for the desegregation of Philadelphia's streetcars, helped establish a Black baseball league, and championed the right to vote for Black men. He even served as a major in the Pennsylvania National Guard, proving that one could indeed be both an intellectual and a man of action.

Sadly, Catto's life was cut short when he was murdered on Election Day in 1871 by a white Democrat who opposed Black voting rights. His death, a tragic symbol of the violent resistance to Reconstruction-era civil rights, underscored the profound risks faced by those daring to seek equality. While not Jewish, his commitment to justice and education certainly brought a fair amount of "nachas" to those who understood the struggle.
