Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Odetta's journey into the American folk music canon began after a brief stint in musical theater. Her rich, powerful contralto and commanding stage presence made her a singular figure, interpreting traditional spirituals, blues, and folk songs with an authenticity that resonated deeply.

While her sound was undeniably American, drawing heavily from African-American traditions, Odetta herself never claimed any Jewish heritage. Nor did she convert, observe, or otherwise engage with Jewish identity beyond, perhaps, performing in cities with prominent Jewish populations, as most successful musicians do. So, no, she wasn't a crypto-Jew either, just a regular, exceptionally talented American singer.

Her influence stretched far beyond the concert halls; she was a fervent advocate for civil rights, marching with Martin Luther King Jr. and using her music as a tool for social change. This commitment to justice, coupled with her iconic performances that inspired generations of musicians from Bob Dylan to Joan Baez, makes her undeniably kvell-worthy, even if not ours to kvell over. She brought significant nachas to someone.
