Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey, a name synonymous with daytime television and aspirational living, has captivated audiences for decades. Her rags-to-riches story is the stuff of legend, transforming a humble Mississippi upbringing into a multi-billion dollar media conglomerate. It’s almost as if she invented the confessional interview, albeit with significantly better lighting.
While her spiritual journey has often been a topic of public discussion, featuring everything from Christian faith to New Age philosophies, a deep dive into ancient Hebrew texts or a sudden embrace of gefilte fish has yet to materialize. One could argue, however, that her ability to turn a book club recommendation into a national phenomenon displays a certain Talmudic dedication to discourse.
Nevertheless, Oprah’s impact on popular culture and philanthropy is undeniable. She has championed education, women's rights, and the art of the perfect giveaway, reliably gifting her audience with cars, homes, and life-altering epiphanies. Her capacity to make entire demographics feel seen and understood is a superpower, even if said superpower isn't derived from the Torah.
So, while Oprah may not be lighting Shabbat candles or debating the finer points of kosher dietary laws, her achievements are so monumentally significant that even the most jaded kveller would struggle to suppress a little nachas. She’s the queen of all media, a veritable Midas of mainstream appeal, and that, in its own way, is quite Jewish… in spirit, at least.
