Oscar Micheaux

Born in Metropolis, Illinois, Oscar Micheaux began his diverse career as a Pullman porter before becoming a successful homesteader in South Dakota. It was there, amidst the vast prairies, that he found inspiration to write novels, using his experiences to craft narratives that resonated with a burgeoning African-American readership. Not content with just words, Micheaux soon set his sights on the nascent film industry, intent on telling stories that Hollywood simply wasn't interested in.

Micheaux's foray into filmmaking was nothing short of revolutionary. He established his own production company, Micheaux Film and Book Company, and went on to write, produce, and direct more than 40 feature films, making him the most prolific African-American filmmaker of his time. His movies, often tackling complex social issues like lynching, racial inequality, and class struggle, provided a counter-narrative to the caricatures prevalent in mainstream cinema.

While his films were often low-budget and faced distribution challenges, Micheaux's artistic vision and entrepreneurial spirit were undeniable. He traversed the country, showing his films in churches, school halls, and independent theaters, building an audience and a legacy that inspired generations of Black artists. His relentless pursuit of storytelling, against overwhelming odds, undoubtedly earns him some serious K-points.

Despite his groundbreaking work, there is no indication that Micheaux had any connection to Judaism, either through identity or origin. His focus remained squarely on the African-American experience, making his I and O scores, understandably, a perfect zero.
