Monsignor Óscar Romero, born in El Salvador, dedicated his life to the Catholic Church, eventually becoming the Archbishop of San Salvador. While his work was deeply spiritual, his real claim to fame (and martyrdom) came from his very public and very loud criticism of the military government and its rampant human rights abuses.
