Born Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, Pablo Neruda adopted his famous pen name from a Czech poet, which, for all its exotic flair, still doesn't quite get him into the tribe. His early life in rural Chile was, by all accounts, devoid of synagogue attendance or gefilte fish, focusing instead on burgeoning literary talents and, later, radical politics. There's simply no hidden Bar Mitzvah photo waiting to surface.

Neruda's political career was as robust as his poetry, serving as a diplomat and senator for the Communist Party, eventually fleeing Chile due to political persecution. While his commitment to social justice and the common man might align with certain Jewish values, it wasn't rooted in Jewish identity or tradition. His passion was for the people, not the Torah.

He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1971, solidifying his place as one of the 20th century's most influential poets. While his love poems could melt even the most cynical heart, and his political poetry stirred nations, there's no historical record of him ever kvelling over a particularly good bagel. A true literary giant, but religiously, he's firmly in the gentile camp.
